“Interlaced” is a 2-song “single” or EP consisting of Dark Ride (track one) and Interlaced (track two). Both tracks will be on the upcoming album “Getting Closer”. I have deliberately chosen to release a single with 2 songs, to introduce the listeners to the concept for the upcoming album. I have also deliberately chosen to call the Single “Interlaced”, even though the main track and story is related to “Dark Ride”. Interlaced is to me spot on, because the story and concept around this and the coming releases, are interwoven and crossed intricately together.
Back in March this year I released the single “Clouds”, which was the last single from Phase One (Year One, from April 21 to April 22). The idea was to conclude Phase One in April / May and start in parallel with Phase 2 with the theme / concept “Time”. A lot was already planned and in progress, but unfortunately I encountered some health issues in March / April. I had a clear plan and lots of ideas, but was not really able to work on any of it. The idea was to conclude Phase One by collecting all tracks (Singles) into an EP or album, with some short transitions in between the tracks. Each transition was going to be based on something from the previous track. I did start working on it while being sick, but it did not really work out for me at that time. However, one day after having done an MRI scan, I was sitting outside the waiting area, as I was not feeling great and needed to sit and relax. As always, my head was overloaded with ideas (probably more than normal, due to all this). During the time sitting and recovering from the MRI experience, I got an idea to “reshape” the transitions into 5 alternative versions of each of the 5 releases (from Phase One). I am not sure what triggered this idea, but while working on “Clouds” and new tracks for Phase Two, I had started to use significantly more samples / sampling. At that time, Burial had recently released a sort of ambient Album / EP. I also recall having listened to alternative versions of tracks from Archive and Marconi Union. The whole idea of taking something existing and turning it into something completely new and different really intrigued me. Somewhere in May I started to get better and started slowly to work on this “new“ concept. End of June I had the 5 tracks more or less ready. However, 5 tracks did not feel right in terms of a release, so I created an additional 2 tracks. Adding those 2 tracks to sort of start / finish this, did help but was somehow still not enough. Therefore I carried on and created another 4-5 tracks. Beginning of August I started mixing, mastering and compiling the tracks. The end result is this 2 song “single”or EP (with Dark Ride as the main track), a full album (to be released mid November) and an EP in January / February 2023. Music has always been an important part of my life, however with the release of Circles in April 2021, it became even more important to me, and also more integrated into my life. I believe I was caught a bit off-guard. Having pushed myself to complete something again (since 2017) and pushed myself even harder to get the story out of my head, was quite a surprise, but also very satisfying. I had almost forgotten the sensation of completing a track, which is a very unique feeling (so unique, that I am not even going to try to explain it). “Circles” is also the track with the strongest and most unique feeling (to me personally). It was quite a challenge for me to get the story down on paper, but I somehow knew I had to. I also knew very well what was significant to me in the track. “Dark Ride” is an alternative and slightly darker version of "Circles”. It is much shorter, more minimal and has a sort of "dusty" and organic feel to it. It is “reshaped” based on sampled and stretched pieces from the original track and further combined with additional samples, effects, etc. One of the additional samples is a field recording of breaking waves (breakers). The original track has a quite long and complex story to it, one of them being a combination of a few sounds, which gives a sort of “circling” effect. I did not include this in the original story, as it would make it too complex. However, these sounds also gives me the sensation of water. It makes me think about breaking waves, harbours and the sound (noise) of wire on masts. A quite distinct memory from my childhood and my parents, which is also why I decided to incorporate this field recording into the soundscape. This alternative version and little extra story makes everything around “Circles” complete (for me personally). Track two (Interlaced) is a new track that continues the concept of reshaping existing tracks and sounds. This track contains sampled and stretched sounds from some of the previous releases, as well as a live recording from an improvised session in 2019. As for "Dark Ride", it has also been combined with additional samples, effects, etc. The track is less dusty, quite organic and has a sort of sweeping repetition to it. |
